Most junk removal companies can haul away just about anything you’d find in a typical home or business. But there are some items that are off-limits for safety, environmental, or legal reasons. If you’re planning a cleanout and want to avoid surprises on the day of service, here’s what to know.
Hazardous Materials
This is the biggest category of items that junk removal companies can’t take. Hazardous materials include paint and paint thinners, chemicals and solvents, pesticides and herbicides, motor oil and automotive fluids, propane tanks and compressed gas cylinders, asbestos-containing materials, and medical waste including needles and sharps.
These items are regulated by the EPA and Florida DEP and require specialized disposal. Polk County holds periodic household hazardous waste collection events where residents can drop off these materials for free. Check the Polk County Waste & Recycling website for upcoming dates and locations.
Items With Refrigerants
Older air conditioning units, refrigerators, and freezers that still contain refrigerants need to have those chemicals properly recovered before disposal. Most junk removal companies, including Dibs On Your Junk, can handle refrigerant-containing appliances and route them to certified recovery facilities. However, some operators may charge extra or refuse them entirely. Always mention refrigerant-containing items when requesting your estimate.
Tires
Tires are recyclable but can’t go to a standard landfill. Most junk removal companies will take a small number of tires for an additional fee. For larger quantities, contact a tire recycling facility directly.
Biological and Medical Waste
Anything contaminated with bodily fluids, medical needles, or biohazardous material requires specialized handling. This includes materials from hoarding situations where biohazards are present. For these situations, a biohazard remediation company should be involved before or alongside the junk removal crew.
Extremely Heavy Items
Pianos, safes, hot tubs full of water, and large concrete structures may require specialty equipment beyond what a standard junk removal crew carries. These items can usually still be removed, but they may require a separate quote or specialized scheduling. Always mention oversized or extremely heavy items when booking.
The Bottom Line
The vast majority of items in a typical home or business cleanout can be handled by a standard junk removal service. If you’re unsure about a specific item, the easiest thing to do is call and ask. We’ll tell you upfront whether we can take it and, if not, point you toward the right resource.
